Instead of a pure diesel range, buyers can opt for a full hybrid, with a plug-in hybrid also available. There is still a diesel, but it is only available in the middle 3-specification.
In addition to more variety in the engine lineup, the Sorento is bigger and more spacious than before, and there are new connectivity and driver assistance features.
As a caravanner, you may now be wondering: "Should I switch to a hybrid Sorento or stick with diesel?" The hybrid option for the new Kia Sorento is the heavier choice, weighing in at 2006 kg compared to the 1954 kg weight of its predecessor. Both have a maximum carrying capacity of 100 kg. All other important towing values speak for diesel. Its maximum trailer weight is 2500 kg instead of 1650 kg, and the diesel has a torque of 325 lb ft instead of 258 lb ft.
But even though the Sorento hybrid is outperformed by the diesel, it can comfortably take a medium-sized caravan at speed. In a test the Kia was attached to a Swift Fairway Platinum 560 with a MiRO of 1464 kg. When accelerating to 100 km/h, they could hear the engine working harder than when driving alone, but the noise was not intrusive.
On highway inclines and with headwind, the Sorento held 60 miles per hour without problem, although the automatic transmission tended to search for the right gear. Starting at intersections, they would have liked a little more performance, but this was more due to the transmission than a lack of pulling power.
In standard eco mode, there was a slight hesitation when starting. Switching to "sport" mode made the car more eager from a standstill. When starting uphill, it was similar. In "eco," the Sorento moved steadily away, but with all-wheel drive, traction on wet asphalt was not a problem.
On country roads, the Kia felt controlled and confident. The firm suspension allowed very little bounce over dips and rises, and the direct steering helped the driver position the car and caravan precisely. It was only when they turned onto a highway that they realized just how well the new Sorento tows. The winds were strong enough that they would have considered postponing the test, but the large Kia took the conditions in stride.
