Imagine the Volvo EX90 seven-seat SUV as a charming Scandinavian country estate, and then picture the new EX30 as a chic urban apartment right in the heart of Stockholm. It's compact, more budget-friendly, yet exudes the same level of trendiness.

When looking for a mid-weight electric tow car and considering the Volvo EX30, it's wise to extend your list to include a selection of other electric SUVs. Think about adding contenders like the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Tesla Model Y to your shopping exploration.

How much can a 2024 Volvo EX30 tow?

The 4,850-pound (2200kg) towing capability of the EX30 is comparable to that of the majority of midsize three-row rivals. A maximum driving range of 300 miles is also anticipated for the future EX30 production variant after a full charge.

While it occupies the compact end of Volvo's SUV lineup, it hasn't been shortchanged in the design department. Just like its larger counterparts, it boasts an immaculate exterior and the quintessential minimalist interior that defines Volvo's signature style.

Your powertrain choices extend to three battery and motor configurations. You can decide between the Single Motor (272hp and a 51kWh battery), the Single Motor Extended Range (272hp and a 69kWh battery), and the Twin Motor Performance (428hp and a 69kWh battery).

Is the EX30 a good tow car?

The platform of the Volvo EX30 is shared with the Smart #1, encompassing batteries, motors, and more. Yet, this EX30 not only possesses a more appealing aesthetic, in my view, compared to the Smart #1, but it's also available at a more affordable price point.

Now, let's delve into the topic of towing capabilities. The introductory-level EX30, equipped with a 49 kWh battery, can manage a towing capacity of 1,000 kg and features a single rear-wheel-drive motor.

Subsequently, there's the ER (Extended Range) iteration of the Single Motor model. While its power output remains consistent, it accommodates a larger 64 kWh battery, leading to an increase in towing capacity to 1,400 kg.

Now, the spotlight is on the version of the Volvo EX30 that's creating waves – the Twin Motor Performance. It shares the same 64 kWh battery as the Single Motor ER version but boasts significantly more power.

The EX30 Twin Motor Performance showcases a robust 422 HP and accelerates from 0 to 60 in an impressive 3.6 seconds, all available at a price just below £41,000. Essentially, no other vehicle, whether ICE or BEV, can rival this level of performance at such a price point
